FRIENDS FOR LIFE
One of this year’s philanthropies is the Food Pantry at Friends for Life in Memphis, TN. For more than three decades, Friends For Life has been preventing the spread of HIV and helping those affected by HIV/AIDS live well. Their holistic, client-centered approach provides a variety of services coordinated through one centralized model. They strive to address the roots of need—including stigma and inequality—to improve health and wellness for everyone they serve. Their goal is to eliminate new transmissions of HIV in Memphis and the Mid-South and empower those living with HIV to become their healthiest, happiest selves.
Friends For Life, one of the oldest and most comprehensive AIDS service organizations in the southern United States, was founded in 1985. A group of friends whose loved ones were dying from complications associated with HIV/AIDS formed the Aid To End AIDS Committee in 1985, the organization that grew to become Friends For Life. The agency merged with another nonprofit agency, Aloysius Home, in 1999, allowing an expansion of services that includes permanent supportive housing.
Today, Friends For Life employs more than 50 team members and serves more than 2,700 clients annually. The agency provides services to individuals and families living in an eight-county service area that includes Shelby, Tipton and Fayette counties in Tennessee; Crittenden County in Arkansas; DeSoto, Marshall, Tate and Tunica counties in Mississippi.
The Friends for Life Nancy Fletcher Food Pantry is designed to improve medical adherence to HIV medications by offering the nutritious food and proteins that allow HIV/AIDS medications to properly function. Food is a critical component in medical adherence and helps clients stay virally suppressed, reducing the incidence of HIV being passed on to others. Core services like food pantry deliveries and nutritional counseling also improve medical outcomes by helping to prevent cyclical poverty within families, an unfortunate outcome for those facing the stigma of living with HIV/AIDS in the Mid-South.
